July 2013. Jody Genessy, a beat reporter for the Deseret News covering the Utah Jazz, needed a word for what Rudy Gobert did to opposing offenses. He was 7’1” with a 7’9” wingspan, and when he planted himself in the paint, the basket ceased to exist for most players. Genessy put two words together: “stifle” + “Eiffel Tower.” The Stifle Tower. It was portmanteau as scouting report.

It spread because it was true. Three Defensive Player of the Year awards later, the name had earned its permanent residency.

That Rudy Gobert is a structure — immovable, towering, and specifically designed to obstruct. That standing near him is its own deterrent. That the basket becomes, in a meaningful sense, his.

APEX has a complicated relationship with Rudy Gobert. His Defensive Impact pillar scores are solid — rim protection and rebounding are both captured. D-EPM, added in v2.5, actually caused his overall ranking to drop: the metric penalizes certain defenders whose team-context advantages inflate their raw numbers. The model sees a very good defensive center. It doesn’t see what opposing coaches see when they draw up plays.

Here is what APEX cannot score: the shots that don’t happen. The drive an opponent abandoned because Gobert was standing there. The rim that felt four feet higher. Shot deterrence was explicitly named as limitation #6 in APEX v4.1 documentation, and no defender embodies that gap more than Gobert.

The APEX Paradox

Gobert’s nickname is about presence. APEX measures outcomes. The most intimidating thing about the Stifle Tower is what doesn’t happen around him — and that’s precisely what the model is blind to. Three DPOYs. Model says: decent. The model is missing something.
