Naming history

  • MCI Center 1997-12–2006-01
Original naming deal with telecom MCI. The arena opened during MCI's pre-bankruptcy peak.
  • Verizon Center 2006-01–2017-08
Verizon acquired MCI in 2006; the venue rebranded to reflect the parent. Held during the Wizards' Wall-Beal era and Capitals' rise.
  • Capital One Arena 2017-08–present
Capital One signed after Verizon's deal expired — a 10-year, ~$100M agreement. Coincided with Monumental Sports building the U.S.'s first in-arena retail sportsbook (Caesars, May 2021).

Renovations

  • 2024–2026 $840M
$840M Monumental Sports-led modernization — among the largest single arena renovations in NBA history. Expanded premium spaces, new entrance plaza, scoreboard, and concourse rework. Funded after the Wizards and Capitals nearly relocated to Virginia in late 2023; the deal kept both teams in DC.
